Creating Art...Behind the Scenes

Sometimes when creating a commission, the client requests very specific things in the artwork, elements in which I need to find the proper reference photo to make the illustration work.

This was an illustration for an erotic e-book, and the author/client was very specific as to the 'look' of the protagonist--red hair, fair skin, beautiful and innocent. I actually modeled the character's face on the author, but I needed a beautiful, curvy body as reference.

I found a gorgeous photo of Playboy's Miss November 2001, Lindsey Vuolo.....this lovely woman fit perfectly for what I needed. It took very little manipulation, just adding some thongs, covering her nipples and, of course, changing the face.

While the book never got published, I had a lot of fun with this project, as it was one of my very first color pinups. I hope you enjoy. Feedback is welcome.

This is....Misty Dawn

Misty Dawn is a former Playboy CyberGirl, whose excellent photos by Sam T’ang were published in August 2004 (Sam’s photos are the reference for her art).

Click here to see a full size image of her art and a new lower price on the original.

Misty was born and raised in Michigan. After some years of modeling there, she moved to the Dallas area in the summer of 2005. She has since gotten married and is the mother to a very photogenic little boy. She agreed to a little Q & A:

How did you get your start in modeling?
By chance. I went with a friend to have boudoir pictures taken for her boyfriend. That photog asked if I was a model, or ever considered it. He ended up taking a lot of photos of ME that day. I looked up known local photog's and Sam's name was #1 so for the hell of it I emailed him some of those pictures. He did a test shoot of me that week and the following month I was on a poster for a local radio station.

How were you discovered by Playboy?
When Sam was at the mansion the following week he showed Hef all of the recent models he'd shot and Hef wanted me out there the following week.

How long did you continue modeling afterwards?
I modeled on and off for about 6 years. I started late in the game so by the last year of glamour modeling I was in my late 20's and decided to do fitness modeling. Now that's some hard work!

What are your thoughts on Playboy discontinuing nudity in the magazine?
I think Playboy should stick with what's been working for them for the last 50+ years.

What kinds of things are you doing today?
Nowadays I'm a mom to a 6 year old boy (signed with an agency, of course!) ha
I'm hoping to escape Dallas in the next few years and move to Colorado.

Would you consider going back to modeling?
Again, I go on and off with my fitness and toy with the idea of just one more shoot.

Interview With Jax Turyna

Jax Turyna has been modeling and acting for about 7 years with numerous print and film credits. She has become the #1 female cover model in the Romance Novel Industry. A truly delightful young lady, we met while collaborating on her military style pinup art (based on a photo reference by Ralph Haseltine). Here’s a chance to learn more about her

• What did you think when you saw yourself as a work of original art?
When I first saw the artwork, I thought it was really beautiful. It was so cool to myself in a drawing. I absolutely love the drawing. Vince did such a great job!

See full size art of Jax here.

• How did you get started as a model and actress? How old were you?
I started modeling when I was just about 18 years old. I had always wanted to model and act ever since I was a child. I had professional images taken by my cousin when I was in high school and we used them to submit to agencies. I was signed right away. Acting came soon after, when one of my agents got me a movie audition. My very first movie audition I ever had, it went very well and I was cast.

• What is your favorite genre of modeling?
I do not have a specific genre that is my favorite, I like all aspects of modeling. I shoot romance novels the most which is a very fun, because I get to dress up in all different time periods. I also, shoot a lot of ads. I love doing that as well because it is a fun environment to do the shoots in.

(photo courtesy to Ralph E Haseltine)

• What are some of your acting credits?
I have been on several shows including, God, Guns and Automobiles (History Chanel), Below Deck (Bravo), Web series Rent Controlled and Café Kremlin as well as co-hosted the Mancow TV show in Chicago. I have also had the honor of filming several feature films some of which I was the lead. To see exactly what movies, I have done go to IMBD

• Where can people go to learn more about you, and see some of your portfolio?
To see more of my work, you can go to my website, www.theworldofjax.com You can connect with me via social media through my website.

Interview with Playboy Model Carlotta Champagne

I recently did an interview with Playboy Model and Cyber Girl Carlotta Champagne, a follow-up to one I did a few years ago.  It was a good time for us to catch up.  And read all the way through for a special offer on Carlotta prints!

It’s been several years since I last interviewed you……what is the latest news about your modeling career ?
<b>Nothing to report on, haha! I'm still working with artists, making images, being creative and causing a raucous with my nudity.

You recently moved to Los Angeles from Florida….how do you think this will impact your modeling career?
I really don't know! Los Angeles has so many opportunities. Perhaps more acting and video work will expand my modeling horizon a bit.

You were a Playboy Special Editions Model and Cyber Girl of the Week…Any plans for more Playboy shoots in the future?
I really don't know! I work with Playboy radio somewhat frequently so it's always possible for more big photoshoots as well.

You have a variety of interests outside modeling….what is your favorite down time activity?
I have so many!! I love dance classes at the gym, reading, watching movies, painting... I can't narrow it down.

How long would you like to continue as a nude model? Can you see yourself doing this for several more years, given your extraordinary beauty?
I'm going to do this as long as I can, as long as I still feel good about myself.

Have your post –modeling plans changed since our last interview?
Probably, I don't have any set plans right now. My entire life is up in the air, and it feels completely amazing..

The Art of the (Color) Nude

It's obvious that I love illustrating nude women.  I feel I am very proficient in graphite.  But I've decided that this is the year for me to stretch myself, and work in different media.

The below images are 2 of the 3 commissioned by a client of his (now ex-) wife.  Each was based on nude illustrations that he found, & I added her head to them.  Although I did have some nudes of the lady herself, they were only for facial reference.

I really liked this project, as I had only done a few colored pencil nudes before. This forced me to look at the female nude in color, rather than breaking down the reference photos into black & white tones.

I am really happy with these illustrations; I thought I did well establishing her skin tones, her curves, etc.  Almost the quintessential 'Naked Wife' in my portfolio.

Contact me with any comments or questions.

Playboy's Heather Bauer Redux

Here's another piece of art that I recently updated, of Playboy CyberGirl and Special Editions model Heather Bauer.

I originally did this drawing in 2008, at Heather's request, based on an anonymous photographers photos.  The shots were different than her Special Editions and Cyber Girl pictorials in Playboy, as they were artsy, boudoir and more sensual, with lots of shadows.  When I originally did the art, I focused more  on her figure, her mood, but did not shade anything i the background, like I usually do.

I concentrated mostly on shading the corners to close in the drawing, and darkening some spots on Heather's body.  I also softened the shading around her butt; it was too liney, so I shaded it more,  with softer edges, so it would be more sensual. I also reworked her left eye.

These are the after and before shots, of course.  The reworked drawing will be reshot professionally very soon, and uploaded on my site and available for sale in prints, pillows and licensing then.  What do you think?  Contact me here with any comments or questions

My Partner, My Critic....My Wife

It's time to give a huge shout out to the woman who is responsible for the quality of my artwork, my wife.  She is a self taught decorator, with a photographic memory for color and design. She critiques every piece of art, and provides me with incredible advice and direction.

My wife has been a phenomenal creative director, making fantastic suggestions on all my art, and suggesting some radical changes on a few of them, as seen below.

In this drawing of Playboy Playmate Lindsey Vuolo, my wife had me darken the shading in Lindsey's skin tones a lot, and add some shading to the corners to 'frame' the drawing, and close it in a bit.  But the big change was to soften the "S" curve in her back, and that made a huge difference in the whole look of the artwork.  I followed the reference photo exactly on the first version, but my wife pointed out that it didn't work in the art, and that I don't always have to recreate the photos perfectly.  It improved the art greatly, as it made it a softer, more feminine pose.

The latest redesign came on my personal favorite piece of art of Playboy Cyber Girl Carlotta Champagne. This is one of the drawings based on a photo shoot at our house; however, she told me she didn't like it as a full nude, and really wanted to see me add shorts to the art, as well as some other changes.  She helped me choose some classic "Daisy Duke" shorts as reference, and was instrumental in helping me achieve a sexy, erotic look.  She also suggested changes in Carlotta's shoulder, hair, shading, and the whip.  I have to say I like it better!

The Marilyn Monroe nude was the biggest project on which we fully collaborated,  This was a completely redrawn project, a present for our son.  A family member had the original art, one which our son liked a lot, so my wife suggested just redoing the piece as a present for him, but making it better.  She had a lot of issues with the original, and worked as art director to have me capture her vision.  A truly collaborative effort, this took hours of working and reworking facial expressions, colors, angles, sheet folds.  It was a pleasure to work hand in hand with her to create a very large, special piece.

I can't say enough about how much help my lovely wife gives me on my art.  She has no problem with the subject matter, and her insight and suggestions is always spot on.  Whenever you look at any artwork from me, chances are she had a big say in how it looks.  Thanks honey!!

Why Draw Nudes?

I recently had someone come up to me and ask me, why do you only draw nude women?  The tone of the question threw me off quite a bit, as if I was being judged because of my choice of art.

I have been a figure artist since I was a youngster, drawing my own versions of Spider-Man, The Hulk, and other Marvel heroes.  When I got to college, I naturally gravitated to figure art. I excelled at life drawing class, and found that drawing female curves and muscle tone was challenging, yet rewarding.

I cannot tell people enough how much I love my choice of subject matter.  I consider the female form God's most beautiful creation, and I am not alone.  Artists throughout history have constantly depicted the female nude in many different media and forms.

I especially love creating art of nude women, especially commissions of wives for their husbands.  I've had the pleasure to work with so many couples, and I realize what a special gift a nude portrait is for a loved one.

So, to answer the original question, I draw nude portraits because I like it, I'm good at it, and it gives enjoyment to people.  It celebrates one of nature's most beautiful forms.  I hope you enjoy it too.

After 10 Long Years, Brand New Nude Art!

Finally, after nearly 10 years, I can officially unveil this portrait of Playboy Cybergirl Misty Dawn, based mostly on photos taken by photographer Sam T'ang.

I met Misty online at the old  Playboy Cyber Club when she was first published as Cyber Girl of the Week in August 2004.  She impressed me with her down to earth honesty, her sarcastic and self deprecating sense of humor, and of course, her beauty.  I decided create a large portrait of Misty, and took several of Sam's photos as reference that September.  Then life got in the way.

Besides going through some life-changing events over that time, I was getting a lot of nice paying commissions, and this piece was just put  aside time and again, sometimes for a few years.  I did refocus on this piece recently, however, and in between some other work, I was able to complete it this month.

The above photo of the art will be re shot and uploaded here in a couple of weeks, and then prints and the original will be available for sale.  Please write me to comment on the art, good or bad.  Thanks!
