Interview With Jax Turyna

Jax Turyna has been modeling and acting for about 7 years with numerous print and film credits. She has become the #1 female cover model in the Romance Novel Industry. A truly delightful young lady, we met while collaborating on her military style pinup art (based on a photo reference by Ralph Haseltine). Here’s a chance to learn more about her

• What did you think when you saw yourself as a work of original art?
When I first saw the artwork, I thought it was really beautiful. It was so cool to myself in a drawing. I absolutely love the drawing. Vince did such a great job!

• How did you get started as a model and actress? How old were you? I started modeling when I was just about 18 years old. I had always wanted to model and act ever since I was a child. I had professional images taken by my cousin when I was in high school and we used them to submit to agencies. I was signed right away. Acting came soon after, when one of my agents got me a movie audition. My very first movie audition I ever had, it went very well and I was cast.

• What is your favorite genre of modeling? I do not have a specific genre that is my favorite, I like all aspects of modeling. I shoot romance novels the most which is a very fun, because I get to dress up in all different time periods. I also, shoot a lot of ads. I love doing that as well because it is a fun environment to do the shoots in.

• What are some of your acting credits? I have been on several shows including, God, Guns and Automobiles (History Chanel), Below Deck (Bravo), Web series Rent Controlled and Café Kremlin as well as co-hosted the Mancow TV show in Chicago. All proceeds from the auction of this original art work will be used to to entertain our troops overseas and those still wounded in VA Hospitals all over the world.

What's My Legacy

Having come off of 2014 as the most prolific year of my career in several years, I am excited to build on my successes of the past 12 months.  I have several commissions that may turn into fruition, plus many, many more 'fun' projects in the offing,

But something that has been nagging at me, perhaps because I am getting older, is what legacy will I leave with my art?  I realize that I may not achieve the fame and notoriety of artists like Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas, but I really hope that my art can be enjoyed by others long after I'm gone, as well as now.  How does an artist do that?  I frankly don't know.

I was watching the the feature on Sting during Kennedy Center Honors the other night, and in his intro piece, he said that, after a very prolific songwriting career,  "the songs just stopped coming."  That scared the piss out of me.  What would happen if I suddenly lost my ability to create?  I love what I do, & I love my pinup and nude female subject matter; if my ability to create suddenly left me, I'd be depressed, I'd be lost.  It's scary to even think about it. 

Creative people have a drive to do just that--create.  And our creations are usually very personal, as they are extensions of ourselves.  As I watched Sting as he listened to people giving him tribute through his music, I saw him well up as he rocked and hummed along.  The songs were his offspring, and he was the proud papa as others sang them.  I  looked up at the pieces that hang in our rec room and thought, that is my legacy.  No matter what, these pieces will somehow live beyond me.  I hope you enjoy them.

FLiP Magazine Pinup Published

Finally, the long awaited FLiP Magazine featuring my art of beautiful model/actress Jax Turyna is available to view online here.

The original photo by Ralph Haseltine was changed quite a bit, as you can see.  I also tried to create this artwork in the style of Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas, as well as the famous pinups that decorated our bombers in World War II.  I'm very happy with this piece, and I hope you are too.

Show Some Skin!

In my line of artwork, I draw everything from clothed pin-ups to full blown nude images.  I have fans of just about every image I've ever created, but, as the title of this blog suggests, the biggest responses are from those that show the most skin; i.e., the full nudes.  

This is especially evident on my Facebook Fan Page.  I have a large contingent of fans from the Middle East, India---places that normally do not allow a lot of nude images.  But while a lot of fans are from Asia, most are still from the USA.  I have tested placing non-nude pinups, and nude drawings, and the largest number of 'likes" is always for the "nakey."

Well, duh, you might say, and I guess I would agree. But I guess I'm a little confused at all of the attention for the full nudes, as opposed to the very sexy, very demure pin-ups.  Pinups, also know as "cheesecake," are the SFW way to view sexy images of women (or men, for that matter), covering up the essentials, yet showing a LOT of skin somewhere.

Pinups are not always fully clothed, mind you; there are plenty of semi nude and implied nude pinup examples.  I'm speaking of the contrast in responses to MY art, and the differences in the likes on Facebook.  Thoughts on this? 

I'm Published (Again)!

Rocket Science Productions, the publisher of Flip Magazine, (a title that has published my art in the past) has just released a new book called For the Boys: Pin-ups for the Troops, a collection of photos inspired by the pin-up art of Gil Elvgren. Elvgren is a personal hero of mine, as I loved his flirty and exaggerated, yet realistic depiction of beautiful women.

According to the company website, "...this is the 2nd Edition of full color book of Gil Elvgren re-creations from photographers and models across the nation...specifically created to entertain our troops overseas and those wounded in VA Hospitals all over the world!"
